CANCER DRIVE 26 KIDS CARING FOR KIDS: REMEMBERING LAURA COTESTA

The 2021 – 2022 school year began with continued concerns over COVID-19, and some students resumed on-line learning while others attended Lockerby for in-person learning. The Cancer Drive was deferred from the usual October date to an April date, and adjustments had to be made in the collection of donations.

Still, cancer does not stop for viruses, and the Lockerby students continued to prioritize children with cancer and their families in Sudbury and the north. The committee created Cancer Drive month with a series of activities spread out over the weeks, providing a variety of opportunities to raise funds.

Cancer Drive Sweatshirts were designed, produced, and sold. Other fundraisers and incentives included a basket raffle, a homeroom winner pizza and cake lunch party, and new Air pods for the student who raised the most funds.

Different times require different kinds of fundraising. The result? The Cancer Drive 2022 – Ice Bucket Challenge. Staff members volunteered; Mr. Graham, Vice-Principal Mr. Lafraniere, Ms. Stanyon, and Mr.  Abols braved the icy buckets of water for this cause. Over $250.00 was donated to view this event!

While COVID worries still existed, students moved forward. All community contributions had to be done on-line through the NCF website. The committee members worked both collectively and individually, encouraging LCS students to canvas businesses, family members, friends, and community members. Of course, Sudburians responded generously, even in this difficult economic time. A total of $15,000 was raised and donated to the Paediatric Unit of the Northeast Cancer Centre.
